From Rinks to Recruitment… It’s all about commitment.
As an avid soccer player and a member of my university varsity hockey team, I learned early and often that you get out exactly what you put in. I don’t know about the rest of my teammates but I didn’t push through grueling morning practices for fun (in the freezing Ottawa winters, no less!). I did it because I knew that the payoff would be worth all the pain. Oh yeah – did I mention we won some championships?
In my personal life, there have been many moments such as those championships that have really energized me and made me want to strive to be better. The first of these moments to happen in my professional career came when I referred a friend of a friend to the company I was working for at the time. I took a pragmatic approach - giving her all the facts, the good and the not-so-good about the job – because I wanted to ensure that this organization was the right fit for her, and vice versa. Boy, was it ever! Watching her get hired, excel in her role, and become genuinely excited to come in to work was such a rush. I loved the idea of matching the right person with the right role, and watching the magic happen!
So, you’d think that experience would make me say “hey, if I had a career in recruiting, I could get this feeling every day!” It did, but some would call what happened next the long way around. I prefer to look at it as taking a few years to acquire some items in my toolkit for future use.
My first job out of school was in sales finance for one of the Big 5 banks. In that role, I worked one-on-one with clients to help them reach their personal financial goals…. And I celebrated with each one as they achieved them! Their wins truly felt like my wins, too.
Next it was on to a B2B sales role with an outsourcing company. This time I got to help businesses of all sizes become successful, and again I felt personally invested when my clients achieved their goals. Working with each business individually to understand their needs taught me the value of establishing strong working relationships. And I was even awarded with Presidents Club honours (one of the top sales people). Twice!
Throughout all of this, I was still playing hockey and coaching a very competitive girls hockey team. This required a huge commitment, but I loved it. Helping my players develop and watching them surpass their own expectations of themselves was incredibly rewarding.
And, now, with a lot of great sales experience under my belt, my interpersonal communication skills have sharpened, and my passion to help people is at an all-time high… I have a career in recruiting, and I DO get to experience that first rush of excitement every day!
For the love of sales.
